We've spent time analyzing many images of graffiti and advertising. For me, they share some similarities but also have some differences.
One thing they have in common is that they usually try to persuade or convey something to viewers by using interesting colors, composition, texts and so on. Also, although there are many elements in a piece of graffiti or advertisement, mostly only one or two elements attract us immediately so that we can have an instant reaction to the piece instead of being distracted by too many things.
However, they have many differences. Most advertisements pay attention to their aesthetic value in order to attract customers while graffiti, especially tags and throw-ups, may not be aesthetically beautiful at all. Artists concern more about emotional outlet. In addition, advertising have some conventional rules and strategies since they have been developed for so many years. Comparatively, graffiti is more personalized and distinctive.
In fact, graffiti comes from popular culture with over-saturated advertising and many graffiti now are commercial graffiti, which means artists are paid and permitted. So sometimes we cannot tell the boundary between graffiti and advertisement. When they continue merging with each other, I'm sure something controversial but interesting will happen.
