Transition to college life is not exactly a road covered with a thick blanket of snow so it would not hurt if you fall down after making a mistake. That`s why it hurts when you fall down because you did something wrong yourself, but it hurts even more when you are restrained from getting what you want based on your social identities.
I had no idea that people judge me based on my age rather than skills I have gotten through out my experiences, working in PR this summer. People would often laugh if I ask what leadership positions freshmen can get because a lot of people think that eighteen-year old have less to contribute to the community than older students. But it is not true, that is why it is important to keep trying to break the stereotypes about the age limitations if you are truly passionate about your activity. People would laugh one time, two times maybe. But if you do not give up they will see that your age has nothing in common with what you can do.
Also, I did not know that my ethnicity is important in defining my self-image until I got to the US and had to deal with absolutely different cultural backgrounds. I understood that my values can differ from those around me but it should not be a limitation to expressing my thoughts. In contrast, it makes me a good team member because I can bring unusual perspective to the table and help to find a creative solution. These beautiful mix of cultural backgrounds is what defines a truly successful idea. I think people should not hide their cultural backgrounds out of fear to be judged, but rather show all the beneficial traits and values of their ethnicity to enrich the society on campus.
