Whether it be a 400 person lecture or a 15 person classroom, every sniffle, every cough shatters the silence like a rock through a window. I try to suppress it but my disease just wants to spread. I called UHS in an effort to cure myself and do my part to continue learning uninterrupted. They told be they could see me over a week from when I called. Am I supposed to have a premonition that I'm going to get sick and call for an appointment then if I actually want help? By the time I get to my appointment, I'll either be better or dead! Not to knock modern medicine, it's done a great deal for me, but what's the point if I can't access help?
Either way, I'd like to apologize for any disruption I caused in class. I'm just a college student, a pseudo-adult if you will, trying to get through an upper respiratory infection without breaking the bank. Obviously I'm making it through fine, otherwise I wouldn't have attended class today. I'm merely using a little hyperbole to bring attention to the serious lacking in our health department. In the meantime, cheers to cough medicine and tissues.
This is very true. I am currently a little sick as I have a cough and every single time I cough in class, everyone stares. It is actually pretty frightening and a little embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteBeing Freshman, we are all going through the same experiences for the first time. Being sick at college is extremely hard as I feel that if I do not go to class, I will fall behind. College is like a train that never stops. It will continuously keep moving along its tracks, not caring if you get on or not.
I also tend to disagree with you a little when you talk about our health department. I believe that we have one of the better health departments in the nation and every time that I have to go see them, they help me out. I did, however, have to wait a while. But that is not unusual. Think about how many students and faculty that these hardworking doctors must deal with every day. I respect what they do.
I love this piece by the way!
Just so you know you can always just walk in to see someone; there will just be a wait. Hope that helps you in the future!
ReplyDeleteI can absolutely relate to your feelings about being sick in college, especially when you have to take 3 exams in a row and write a 10 page paper. Low energy levels just destroy the mood and getting one more pain-killer medication is not always the right choice to keep going. But we should keep going, because Michigan is so competitive and we don`t want to fall behind.
ReplyDeleteI hope that UHS will help me this time, since being sick kills the enthusiasm for studying.
